His Suffering And Death For You And For Me

Isaiah 53:1-13

1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Introduction:

Isaiah was a prophet of the Old Testament

  • He foretold the birth of Jesus in Isaiah 7:14.
  • His proclamation of the gospel is found in Isaiah 61:1.
  • His humiliation sufferings and death in Isaiah 52:13–53:12
  • His return to claim His own in Isaiah 60:2–3.

The book was written over 700 years before the birth of Jesus, and it’s predictions are so accurate, that no man could possibly have written them, nor fulfilled them unless he get his vision from God.

This morning we will be talking about the humiliation, suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ, as predicted by Isaiah, in comparison with the gospel as well as the benefit we attain through his death.

He Was Despised And Rejected

In Mathew 1:21, Jesus came to:

  • Deliver man from their evil ways
  • Deliver man from their sin
  • Save us from eternal damnation
  • Bring us back unto himself

But man did not recognize Him.

They rejected Jesus.

Isaiah 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

This shows that He was not recognized as the true Messiah.

His doctrine was not welcome.

Man prefers to continue in their sinful ways, there is no place for God.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Men fail to submit their lives to their maker. They fail to accept Jesus as the Son of God.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The household of Israel rejected the Son of God by hanging Him on the cross, not knowing that it was His primary duty to die for sinners.

He came unto His own, and His own received him not.

John 1:11-12

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Even while he was in the Mount of Olives praying, he says:

Luke 22:42-43

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Isaiah’s prediction of the Lord’s suffering is synonymous to that in Mathew 27.

The savior of the world was:

  • Beaten
  • Stripped naked, after which they put a scarlet robe on Him
  • Crown of thorns placed on His head
  • Spit on

The Son of God was rejected by man, he was mocked, disgraced and was given vinegar instead of water.

Theologians confirm that He was beaten beyond recognition, all for you and for me, without ever complaining.

Now man is no longer an enemy of God, we are no longer an alien but a member of the household of God as stated in:

Ephesians 2:15-19

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

When predicting his birth in Isaiah 9:6 he was called the Prince of peace.

He has come to sacrifice Himself for our sin once and for all, with His blood on the cross He settles the strife between man and God, and He made Himself a propitiation for our sin.

He died that we may live forever.

The work of our salvation can only be achieved by His suffering and death.

John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Isaiah also predicted his imprisonment and judgment, which was also confirmed by Mathew in chapter 27 and Mark in chapters 14 and 15.

  • He was punished for the sin He new nothing about.
  • He was arrested like a thief.
  • While He was arrested all His disciples ran away.
  • He paid the price for our sin.
  • He was slain so we could have eternal life
  • He took upon himself the punishment for our sin.

The lord Jesus was crucified with two thieves, one on the right and the other on the left.

While the thief on the left was mocking Him, the one on the right was asking for mercy.

After his death He was buried in Joseph of Arimathæa’s sepulcher.

Matthew 14:1-2

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

He was made an offering for our sin. Isaiah 53:11

What more does the scripture say about the Lord’s suffering and death that was not predicted by prophet Isaiah?

Isaiah clearly stated that He was made to suffering for our sin and this is exactly what happen 700 years later.

Jesus died a painful death.

He gave his life as ransom for all.

John confirms that he was the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

The following passages of the gospel are in compliance with the record of Isaiah.

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Hebrews 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself?

I Peter 2:24-25

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Jesus was nailed to the cross for our sin, and He said, “It is finished”.

This meant there was no longer the need for animal sacrifices, because he was the perfect sacrifice.

They were there sitting down making jest of him and calling him by the name: “King of the Jews”.

The Bible confirms that at the ninth hour he opened up his mouth shouting “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?”Which is to say, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

This meant that His sacrifice, the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement for sins.

It signified that now the way into the Holy of Holies was open for all people, at all times, both Jew and Gentile.

This also implies that we can go straight to God and make any request of him.

Hebrew 10:19-22

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Now the door has been opened for, as many that will receive Him.

As guilty sinners we were condemned to death, but he took our place.

We have now been redeemed into the family of God by the death of his son on the cross.

The lord Jesus has used his blood to purchase eternal life for us.

This means we will not have to die again, for we shall pass from death unto life.

This does not mean we will not die a physical death, since it has been appointed unto all man to die, but we shall be resurrected to reign with Him in his father’s kingdom.

It is now very important to surrender our lives unto Him who died for us.

Our Benefits

1)    Pardon for our sin: 1 John 1:9, Roman 10:9-10, Proverbs 28:13, Psalm 32:5

2)    Salvation of our soul: Act 16:31,

3)    Justification: Act 13:39

4)    Adopted into the family of God: Roman 8:15, Galatians 4:5-6, Ephesians 1:5

5)    Hope of eternal life: 1 Peter 1:3-4, Hebrews 3:6, Titus 3:7, 2:13, 1:2, Thessalonians 2:16, 1Thesselonians 2:19, Colossians 1:5, John 14:1-4, 1 John 5:13

6)    Healed from sickness and disease: Psalm 103:3, 107:20, Isaiah 53:5, 57:18, Jeremiah 3:22, I Peter 2:23, James 5:16,

7)    Answered Prayer: Matthew 7:7, 21:22, James 5:15-16,

8)    Deliverance from the power of darkness:

On the contrary, if we fail to accept Jesus as the true Messiah; if we fail to confess our sin and be washed through the blood that He shed on the cross at Calvary:

1)    We shall face the wrath of God: John 3:36, 1 Thessalonians 1:9, Colossians 3:6, Romans 1:18, 5:9,

2)    Eternal damnation is awaiting the person: Proverbs 29:1, Mark 4:29, John 5:28-29,

In addition to the above two, anyone that does not accept Jesus will not be a beneficiary of any of the above benefits, missing the opportunity to reign with Christ.

Decision point:

Will you surrender your life to the one who suffered and died for you today? What will you give to Him in return?

In conclusion: I want you to reason with this composer and make a conclusive decision before it’s too late

I gave My life for thee, My precious blood I shed,
That thou might ransomed be, and raised up from the dead
I gave, I gave My life for thee, what hast thou given for Me?
I gave, I gave My life for thee, what hast thou given for Me?

My Father’s house of light, My glory circled throne
I left for earthly night, for wanderings sad and lone;
I left, I left it all for thee, hast thou left aught for Me?
I left, I left it all for thee, hast thou left aught for Me?

I suffered much for thee, more than thy tongue can tell,
Of bitterest agony, to rescue thee from hell.
I’ve borne, I’ve borne it all for thee, what hast thou borne for Me?
I’ve borne, I’ve borne it all for thee, what hast thou borne for Me?

And I have brought to thee, down from My home above,
Salvation full and free, My pardon and My love;
I bring, I bring rich gifts to thee, what hast thou brought to Me?
I bring, I bring rich gifts to thee, what hast thou brought to Me?
