How Hungry Are You?

Proverbs 27:7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

  • Liver & onions
  • Collard greens
  • Cottage cheese
  • Worms
  • Spiders

To some of us all of this sounds gross and offensive to our palate, but somewhere someone thinks that they are a delicacy.

The taste of the food depends a lot on how hungry you are.

Many times you may not be eating the most flavorful item, but because of your hunger, it tastes wonderful.

  • Bologna & cheese sandwich

Everything about God is not going to be strawberries & ice cream.

There are some things about God and His procedures that in my flesh I do not like.

  • Fasting
  • Total submission
  • No glory in me
  • Trust

But I am so hungry for God that everything He gives me, I ravenously eat.

Hungry for God:

Psalm 42:1 To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

  • Audible panting
  • Hoarse breathing
  • Dogs chasing
  • Longing for the water
  • Desperate need for god
  • Satisfied with god?
  • You are not hungry

Life has a way of taking the taste of God out of your life.

We become satisfied with mundane existence, and the habit of religion.

When was the last time you hungered for just the presence of God?

My relationship grows stale from my lack of passion for God.

2 Samuel 22:2-4

2 And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

4 I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

  • David is trying to explain what God is to him
  • Limited vocabulary
  • Mine, mine, mine
  • Man after God’s own heart, not because of praise, but hunger, which leads to praise & worship

2 Kings 7:3-9

3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?

4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

5 And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.

6 For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.

7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.

9 Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.

4 Outcasts

  • Dying of starvation
  • Decided to die fighting
  • God got involved
  • Food was given

HUNGER DROVE THEM TO ACTION

Apathy will destroy your appetite for God!

Psalm 107:9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

HOW HUNGRY ARE YOU?
