W.D.J.D. (What Did Jesus Do?)

I.               WWJD – What would Jesus do?

II.             Baptized

Matthew 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him

A.            Jesus our savior was baptized by John in the Jordan River

B.             The Bible records this event.

1.             Jesus went down into the water and came up out of it.

2.             Jesus was baptized by immersion.

a)             What did Jesus do?

b)             Jesus was Baptized

III.           Private Prayer

Luke 22:39-40 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

A.            The Scripture often records Jesus taking time to pray

B.             His disciples were aware of it and even asked Him to teach them how to pray.

1.             Obviously this was something that Jesus did on a regular basis.

2.             One of the fundamental parts of His earthly ministry was times of prayer.

3.             His last act before He was arrested was to find a place to pray.

a)             What did Jesus do?

b)             Jesus prayed

IV.           Church Attendance

Luke 4: 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

A.            Jesus went to church on a regular basis.

1.             As his custom – or his habit, his nature, what he often did – he went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath day.

2.             When it was time for church service, Jesus went to church.

3.             Nobody made Him go.

a)             He did not even have any disciples at this point in His ministry

b)             Whether anyone went with Him or not, He was going to church.

c)             What did Jesus do?

d)             Jesus went to Church

V.            Church Participation

Luke 4:17-20 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down

A.            Jesus participated in the service

1.             He did not come just to sit and be a spectator.

2.             It does not say that the minister said, “Jesus will you give us a Word?”

a)             It says that Jesus stood up for to read

b)             A better way of saying that is Jesus stood up to be recognized as wanting to read something to the congregation.

c)             Again no one forced Him to.  He actively participated in the service.

3.             He read from the Old Testament

4.             He spent time explaining the scripture to those in attendance

a)             What did Jesus Do?

b)             Jesus participated in Church service

VI.           Generous Giving

Matthew 6: 1-4 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.  2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:  4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

A.            Jesus gave a lesson to his disciples on the proper way to give

B.             He told them to do their alms in secret.

1.             This implies that Jesus gave regularly

2.             We often find record of Jesus giving food to the multitudes.

a)             Some of the greatest miracles recorded in Scripture were Jesus giving to those around Him.

3.             Jesus gave of his time, his energy, and what little substance that He had to the masses.

4.             Jesus even paid His taxes.

a)             What did Jesus do?

b)             Jesus gave generously to those in need.

VII.         Fasting

Matthew 4:1-2 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered.

A.            Jesus spent time in fasting

B.             In another place a demon was cast out by Jesus

1.             The disciples tried to cast out the demon but were unsuccessful.

2.             Jesus quickly cast out the demon

3.             When the disciples asked why they could not cast out the demon, He told them that it was because they had not prayed or fasted.

4.             Jesus told them that there is power in fasting.

a)             What did Jesus Do?

b)             Jesus Fasted

VIII.       Teaching and Witnessing

Mark 10:1 And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

A.            Jesus often spent time instructing people in the Word of God.

B.             He proclaimed Himself to be God to the people

1.             He told them what they needed to do to be saved.

2.             It did not matter if it was a popular message or not.

3.             Jesus spoke the same to religious leaders (Nicademous), Rulers (Rich Young Ruler), and the common man.

4.             His message did not change, nor was He ever silenced.

a)             What did Jesus do?

b)             Jesus taught and witnessed

IX.           We know what Jesus Did

A.            It is all in scripture for us to read

1.             Jesus was Baptized

2.             Jesus prayed

3.             Jesus went to church

4.             Jesus participated at church

5.             Jesus gave to others

6.             Jesus fasted

7.             Jesus witnessed

a)             Don’t you want to be like Jesus?
