Thou Art The Man

Ps 51:1-17

One of the most difficult things for anyone to do is to admit our weakness and our failures. No man wants to be wrong in his own sight. That is why David asks God to Judge him because he knew there would be a righteous judgment coming from God.

The consequences David had to face for his sins wasn’t easy to face.

2 Sam 12:10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

Sometimes the judgment of God doesn’t seem fair but David never accused God of being unfair he knew that his judgment came because of sin.

David repented but the judgment remained 2 Sam 12:14-16 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted and went in and lay all night upon the earth. Here is the consequences of David’s sin.

1st he lost his son that Bathsheba gave birth to,

2nd His son Absalom rebelled against him,

3rd Amnon raped his sister Tamar

4th Absalom had Amnon his brother killed

5th And Solomon in all his wisdom had the Kingdom taken from him because of his rebellion against God and there was confusion in the house of David all his life.

David found out that everyone he was involved with, family friends and even his enemies was affected by his disobedience.

* But still he was the apple of God’s eye.

* Just because we have to endure the chastening of the Lord doesn’t mean that God is mad at us.

* God is good and he loves us without conditions.

All God is looking to do is help us become obedient and loving, because that proves to him that we are after God’s heart as much as he is after our heart.

When the prophet Nathan came to David after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

Nathan confronted David with his sin and David realizing he had been exposed by God to the Prophet Nathan, David was broken his heart was smote with such heavy convictions of his sin that he cried unto the Lord.

Most people that are exposed go into denial and even though their sins are open before the Lord they fail to admit “I Am the man.”

* Admitting our faults and failures aren’t easy to do, we are the type of people who never wants to be confronted with our past are present or future.

* We like to figure it all out so that it doesn’t make us appear to be wrong.

It’s easy justify ourselves to ourselves and maybe to a few that are close to us– but the Lord is the Judge and he always makes the righteous judgment.

David cried unto the Lord because he knew where his help would come from as he had written in Psalms 121:1-2

1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Here in Psalms 51 the cry of King David is a cry that all mankind should consider to pray every day.

Ps 51

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

We fail to recognize that even in His displeasure He is still Merciful.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

And he is quick to forgive

3 For I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is ever before me.

He is moved by our repentance.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

David recognized that he had sinned and come short of the glory of God.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Thorough his forgiveness we are made clean by his sacrifice for our sins.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins and blot out all mine iniquities.” He loves us at all times.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

David knew that without God there would never be victory over sin.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

Until we can accomplish the works of God through Repentance and turning fully to God we have no business trying to get others to do what we ourselves cannot do

14 Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

As long as we admit “I am the man” I am not perfect; God can work in us and through us to bring us into perfect unity with the Spirit.

And when we are walking in the Spirit– God is walking in us and guiding our lives.

This 51st Psalms is my prayer most every day “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Having a humble heart in the presence of God is the most important thing in our Christian walk and without it we will never be pleasing unto the Lord.

Casting out devils, speaking in tongues healing the sick are all good but without a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart it will never move God in anyway.

God is moved by love and compassion, faithfulness, giving and reaching to those who are less fortunate. Jesus said one of the greatest commandments was to “love you neighbor as yourself.”

Matt 5:43-48

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said; Thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Matt 19:19-21 Rich ruler

19 Honor thy father and thy mother: and Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

20 The young man saith unto him, all these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

21 Jesus said unto him, if thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

What is He saying “be willing to give it all if necessary to help someone in need don’t give a little give a lot.”

Christ gave his all and he expects us to be willing to do the same.

1 John 3:17-22

17 But whoso hath this world’s good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18 My little children let us not love in word, neither in tongue but in deed and in truth.

19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall assure our hearts before him.

20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart and knoweth all things.

21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

David sinned against God with Bathsheba but there are other sins that we can be guilty of. Can we say “I am the man?”

I am not Nathan the Prophet but I have opened many of your lives up before you and I know the sins that remain in your heart. I can watch your face and listen to you and know when I am right on target.

I hear you say amen when I am speaking into the hearts of others but I also watch as you get silent when I am preaching into your heart and life.

I’m not fooled as some of you think. Some things I just know and other things are revealed by the Lord himself.

We need to examine ourselves when the word of God lets us know that he is searching our hearts to reveal to us the sin that so easily besets us.

What would be your sin today that I have revealed to you? Will you do as David did and say “I am the Man?”

Or will we sit back and know in our hearts that we have been found out but fail to set things straight between ourselves and God?

If you or I fail to follow the example that King David set before us to have a broken Spirit and a broken and contrite heart and be lost because we fail to repent and turn to God.

Luke 19:1-10

1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans and he was rich.

3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

4 And he ran before and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste and come down for today I must abide at thy house.

6 And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully.

7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

8 And Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

He was desperate to see Jesus he went to the extremes to get a glimpse of the Lord and he found favor in the eyes of the Lord and salvation came to his house that day.

He made his confession before the Lord and was willing to whatever it took to make things right. Are we that willing to repent and make things right.

If you repent it doesn’t mean you are released from your sins. They are not remitted until you have righted the wrong.

David admitted “I have sinned before the Lord.” He repented of his sin but he still suffered much in his life but he remained faithful unto God even through his chastisement he loved the Lord.

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God;

Thank God for the Blood of Jesus that washes me free from all my sin.
