The Supernatural Church

By Jim Poitras

“…And grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.”

Acts 4:29-30

The church in the Book of Acts was a Supernatural Church.  Things happened that went beyond the natural or the normal.  Miracles were a way of life.  Signs and wonders were constantly being done.  Throughout the Book of Acts we see the Lord as the “worker.”

The Book of Acts opens with Luke referring to the former book that had been written; the Gospel according to Luke.  This book records what Jesus “…began both to do and teach.” (Acts 1:1)  The Book of Acts gives the continuing story of what Jesus accomplishes through His disciples.

After Jesus went back to heaven, the miracles, signs, and wonders continued.  He promised that they would.

“…The works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father…”

(John 14:12)

“And these signs shall follow them that believe…” (Mark 16:17)

“Behold, I give unto  you power…” (Luke 10:19)

In Greek, as mentioned before, the words “miracle” and “power” come from the same root word.  When God’s spirit comes inside of the spirit of man it produces a potential that is far beyond imagination.  It defies limitations, logic, and the natural.  It becomes super-natural.

A Sunday School teacher who was teaching his class on miracles once asked them “What is a miracle?”  One smart little boy responded, “A miracle is something that can’t happen, but does happen.”  That is a good definition from the mouth of a child.

Miracles in the Book of Acts

The following is not meant to be an exhaustive study of miracles performed in the Supernatural Church.  The miracles mentioned here fall under one of these categories:

Miracles of Healing

Miracles of Supply

Miracles of Deliverance

Miracles of Transportation

Miracles of Protection

Miracles of Judgment

Miracles of Raising the Dead

Students:  As you study each miracle try to determine what category it fits.

Instructors:  Research each example given below and be prepared to teach with an interesting, story telling style.

The Lame Man Walks!

Acts 3:8; 4:16, 22

“And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.”

“Saying, What shall we do to these men? For that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.”

For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.”

   Judged by the Holy Spirit

q  Acts 5:1-10

“But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.”

“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? …And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.”

“And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not  knowing what was done, came in.  And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.  Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?…Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost…”

God works through men!

Acts 5:15-16

“Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.”

The  Faith-full Deacon

Acts 6:8

“And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.”

The Deacon-Evangelist

Acts 8:6-7, 13

“And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.”

“Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. ”

Faster Than an Airplane

Acts 8:39

“And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.”

Acts 9: 8,18

“And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man…And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received  sight forthwith…”

Peter delivered from prison!

Acts 12:1-16

“…Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing…Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.”

King Herod struck dead!

Acts 12:23

“And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.”

Elymas the sorcerer becomes blind!

Acts 13:11

“And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season.  And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.”

The Crippled Walk,Again!

Acts 14:8

“And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked.”

A damsel is delivered!

Acts 16:16-18

“And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us…The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.  And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.”

Prayer & Praise brought deliverance!

Acts 16: 25-30

“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.”

Eutychus raised from the dead!

Acts 20:9-10

“And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.  And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.”

Shake, Shake, Shake Into the Fire

Acts 28:3-5

“And when Paul had gathered a bundle of

sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand…And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.”

Island Miracles

Acts 28:8-9

“And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed.”
