Singing

Col 3:16

I) Word of Christ richly dwell

A) Filled with the Spirit – Eph 5:18

B) Better singers through Bible study – 1 Cor 14:15

II) Teaching and admonishing

A) With all wisdom – insight – shows the importance of the song leader, a good voice is not most important consideration – Jas 1:5

B) Teaching – song must be Biblical

C) Admonishing – includes the idea of encouragement, like “He lives!” – Jas 5:13

D) One another – collective worship by its nature is for the edification of all – Heb 10:23,24 – must be loud enough to be heard by others; is it only a coincidence that Jesus and disciples closed with a song – Mt 26:30

III) Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs

A) Definitions
1- psalms – song of praise from the heart
2- hymns – laud in song
3- spiritual song – ode – common word for song

B) Songs are have purpose, particularly to praise God and enhance our spirit

IV) In your hearts

A) Thanksgiving – true appreciation for God and His blessings to us – Eph 5:20; Ex 15:1-18

B) Making melody with the heart, with emotion – Jas 5:13

V) To God

A) Directed to God – thank the source of blessings – Jas 1:17,18

B) Even the one another part is to direct them to God

Conclusion: Good singing is not measured by the harmony in the voices, but the melody in the heart. Good singing is spirited, scriptural, edifying to one another, and praises our God.
