The Cry of The Soul

Psalms 40:1

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

We need to realize that the Lord is as close as the mention of his name.

We may feel like that we are unworthy to call out to the Lord but Jesus takes pleasure in hearing from us to deliver and help us in the time of need.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Mary Hopkins said our prayer and God’s mercy are like two buckets in a well; while the one ascends the other descends. –

In Psalms 107:  We find beautiful examples of God’s grace and care.  In the following three portions of this chapter, you will see – our actions, our cry, and God’s mercy:

Psalms 107:10-14  Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;  (11)  Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:  (12)  Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.  (13)  Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.  (14)  He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.

They sit in darkness but God will bring light

Luke 1:79  To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

They sit in the shadow of death and the dread of sudden death is the most hideous part of the punishment but God is there;

Psalms 23:4  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

They are bound in the heart and mind with bands of iron but God will set them free.

Isaiah 61:1  The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

The reason of their state is because they thought that they knew better than Jesus, and therefore they left his ways and walked in their own way. Through it all God came and showed mercy and delivered them. Praise the Lord for his goodness

Psalms 107:13-15  Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.  (14)  He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.  (15)  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Psalms 107:17-20  Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.  (18)  Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.  (19)  Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.  (20)  He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

We have others because of their sin face many sicknesses that are the direct result of foolish acts. Thoughtless and lustful men by drunkenness, gluttony, and the indulgence of their passions fill their bodies with diseases of the worst kind.  Then appetite departs from men when they are sick: the best of food is nauseous to them, their stomach turns against it. And they draw near unto the gates of death it is the same with souls afflicted with a sense of sin, they cannot find comfort in the choicest promises of God’s word, but turn away from the gospel, so that they gradually decay into the grave of despair. But notice once again because man put themselves in the situation God in his mercy and grace pulls them out..  IT should be that men would praise God.

Psalms 107:19-21  Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.  (20)  He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.  (21)  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Psalms 107:26-30  They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.  (27)  They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.  (28)  Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.  (29)  He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.  (30)  Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

Those in the storms of life can have their souls melt . No heart is left for anything, courage is gone, and hope is almost dead.

Mark 4:38  And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

There are times that the situations of life seem like we cannot stand upright and are at the end of our ropes but God will deliver us, oh that men would praise him.

Psalms 107:31  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

You may find it hard to call on the Lord, because your spirit is more frustrated than faith-filled.    Or you may feel away from God, because you’ve been less-than-faithful.  It’s so true, that we often feel His presence the least – when we need His power the most.  But thankfully, we can be reunited with His power, because Psalms 107 shows us that God is Faithful even to the Unfaithful – when they call on Him.

You may believe that you have to be perfect in every Christian-way for God to hear you.  The truth is that with a merciful heart, God tenderly searches the Earth, listening and longing to respond to the cries of His children.  So even though you may have failed God in your past, He can start to work in your present.  The Word says He will: Save you from your distresses,
Bring you out of darkness and the deepest gloom, Break away your chains, Send forth His word and heal you, And still your storms in life to a whisper.

Remember the words of Richard Bach, when he said What the Caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly.  It may seem to us like the end, but to the Master, it’s a glorious new beginning.

Psalms 40:1-3   I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.  (2)  He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.  (3)  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
