SUBJECT:  Delighted in God

SCRIPTURE SETTING:

Psalms 1:2 – But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

I.        The Blessed Man is a happy man because he has found delight in God and His Word.

II.        To “Delight” is defined as:

A.        From the Hebrew:

1.    To rejoice in, to desire strongly.

2.    To bend towards (when applied to one’s will).

3.    To take pleasure in, to enjoy.

4.    To be attached to.

B.        From the English:

1.    To be the source of great pleasure, to please highly.

2.    To have or take great pleasure in.

3.    To give joy or satisfaction to.

III.        The Blessed Man delights in the Word of God.  David was a Blessed Man.

A.        Psalm 119 is His expression of love for, faith in, respect for and obedience to the Word.

B.        Read:  Psalm 119:16, 24, 35, 47, 70, 77, 174

Psalms 119:16 – I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Psalms 119:24 – Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.

Psalms 119:35 – Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

Psalms 119:47 – And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

Psalms 119:70 – Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law.

Psalms 119:77 – Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.

Psalms 119:174 – I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight.

IV.        Psalm 40:8 is a prophecy concerning Jesus.

Psalms 40:8 – I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

A.        As a man, he not only delighted in the Word of God, but also in obedience to the Word.

B.        When you find the Word is a great source of pleasure and joy, then obeying it becomes easier.

C.        See:  Matthew 11:30, Romans 12:1, 1 John 5:2-3

Matthew 11:30 – For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Romans 12:1 – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

1 John 5:2-3 – By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

(3)  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

V.        Jeremiah 6:10 teaches us that when there is no delight in the Word that God’s ability to communicate with us is greatly hindered, which is always to our detriment.

Jeremiah 6:10 – To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

VI.        The promises to those who delight in God are powerful!

A.        Psalm 37:4 – He will give to you the desires of your heart.

Psalms 37:4 – Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

B.        Psalm 37:23-24 – God will give you direction and be there to help you when you fall.

Psalms 37:23-24 – The steps of a good man are ordered by thed LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

(24)  Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

C.        Psalm 37:11 – He gives an abundance of peace.

Psalms 37:11 – But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

D.        Psalm 111 – read all of it

Psalms 111:1-10 – Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.

(2)  The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.

(3)  His work is honorable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth forever.

(4)  He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. (5)  He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.

(6)  He hath showed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.

(7)  The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.

(8)  They stand fast forever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

(9)  He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant forever: holy and reverend is his name.

(10)  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth forever.

VII.        Isaiah 58:13-14 – God’s covenant to those who delight in Him.

Isaiah 58:13-14 – If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honorable; and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

(14)  Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
