The Blessed Man – The Ungodly – Part Two

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The blessed life starts with what you are NOT and what you DO NOT do.

One translator of the original Hebrew defines “ungodly” as, “loose man, the man loose from God”. Ungodliness is the SOURCE of all evil. Becoming “loose from God” is the point of departure from positive and universal righteousness. Where sin is not denounced, ungodliness is tolerated. The frame of mind that is loose from God is by many considered the most philosophic and desirable condition of the mind.

The Morality Loose From God – The Truest Morality.

The Science Loose From God – The Wisest Science.

The Character Loose From God – The Most Sound And Noble Character.

PSALM 1 DECLARES THE ERROR OF THIS REASONING!

  • Ungodliness [being loose from God] is the original and fertile source of all transgression. Enmity with God is enmity with all righteousness.
  • Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Romans 8:6-7

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

  • Men are anxious that their opinions and conduct should have the sanction of reason, so they seek to justify their ungodliness to their own understanding.
  • No one sins without making some excuse to himself for his sinning. He is OBLIGED to do so. His ability to reason forces him to explain to himself why he does what he knows is wrong. Whether his reason is a good or bad one, he MUST produce a reason.
  • Ungodly means one who is unsettled, who aims at no certain end, and who walks by no certain rule; he who has subtly rejected Gods’ authority over his life; impious.
  • Because of this, he is at the command of every lust, and at the beck and call of every temptation.

Psalm 1 is a contrast between the Blessed and the Ungodly.

Therefore, it is a comparison between:

  • 1. Those who have sown toward, cultivated, and reaped the benefits of a close relationship with God – The Blessed.
  • 2. Those who choose their own way, thoughts, opinions; accepting no other ultimate authority but their own lusts and will; who have no significant relationship to God – The Ungodly.

THE CHOICE IS CLEARLY YOURS!
