Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus

2 Corinthians 1: 9

The song that we sing “tis so sweet to trust in Jesus just to take him at his word” has more meaning then what we think.  Our scripture reading shows us the importance of trusting in Jesus.

2 Corinthians 1:9  But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

We will expect to die one day and because of this we cannot trust in ourselves to give us eternal life or to raise ourselves from the dead but we are to trust in God who can raise the dead and who can give eternal life.

The Bible tells us time and time again that we need to trust in God and of the promises that come along when we trust in Him.

Psalms 5:11 LITV  But let all who put their trust in You rejoice; let them shout for joy forever, because You cover them. And let those who love Your name be joyful in You.

Psalms 31:19 LITV  How great is Your goodness which You have laid up for those who fear You; You have worked for those who trust in You before the sons of mankind.

Psalms 37:40 KJV  And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

Psalms 125:1 KJV  <A Song of degrees.> They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

Nahum 1:7  The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

Jeremiah 39:18  For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD.

Isaiah 12:2  Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

Isaiah 26:4  Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

Proverbs 29:25  The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

We also have this admonition:

Psalms 118:8-9 KJV  It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.  (9)  It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

Psalms 20:7-8 KJV  Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.  (8)  They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

To trust in Jesus is very simple to do because as the song says we just take him at his word.  In other words we just do he says to do.  As we do what he says for us to do we will see the consequences of our actions and the power of God being made manifest because we have trusted him.   2 Kings 3:7-24.  No matter what the situation looks like sometimes it may seem impossible and then sometimes it may seem silly but if we obey God, because we say we trust him, God will see us through.

John 9:1-7  And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.  (2)  And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?  (3)  Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.  (4)  I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.  (5)  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.  (6)  When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,  (7)  And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

To trust in Jesus and to take him at his word requires on our part a persuasion and persistence.  As Paul said so we should also say:

Romans 8:38  For I am persuaded to him (to be convinced, believe ), that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

2 Timothy 1:12 KJV  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

We have to be like the Saints of old if we are going to trust in Jesus.

Hebrews 11:13  These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

They were persuaded of the promises and they embraced them, the Word embrace means to draw to oneself; it was not a cold and formal reception of them, but a warm and hearty welcome. Such is the nature of true faith.

To trust in Jesus or to simply do what he says to do requires only one of two actions on our part.  I the two actions on our part are we will either obey him or we won’t obey him.  It is simple as that.  We all have the choice, we all had the same opportunity to trust that obey him or not to trust and obey him.

You cannot separate trust and obedience they work hand-in-hand.  As our scripture reading says we do not trust on ourselves but we trust upon God.

Jesus is the Master and we are his servant.

John 12:26  If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

The servant is going to obey his Master.

Romans 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Romans 6:16 NLT  Don’t you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You can choose sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval.

Let us trust Jesus and live, obey his voice and received the blessings that he has for us.

'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,  and to take him at his word; just to rest upon his promise, and to know, "Thus saith the Lord." Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I've proved him o'er and o'er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! 2.   O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust his cleansing blood; and in simple faith to plunge me   neath the healing, cleansing flood! 3.Yes, 'tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease; just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace. 4.                I'm so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, savior, friend; and I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end.

Psalms 22:4-5  Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.  (5)  They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.

Psalms 22:4-5 LITV  Our fathers trusted in You; they trusted, and You delivered them.  (5)  They cried to You, and were delivered; they trusted in You, and were not ashamed.
