The Spirit Of Amalek

Exodus 17:14

14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

I.                                                                                            The question begs to be asked, “who were the Amalekites?”.

                                                                                                          A.          What was it about them that God seemed to take such a vehement hatred to them?

                                                                                                          B.          What is the “spirit of Amalek”?

II.                                                                                          To know who the Amalekites were, we need to know who Amalek was.

Genesis 36:12

12 And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau’s son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau’s wife.

                        A.        So by this, we know Amalek was the grandson of Esau.

                        B.        Esau was hungry one day and came in from an unfruitful hunt.

                                                1.        Esau was the first born of Isaac.

                                                2.        Being the first born, he was the inheritor of the blessings and possessions of his father.

                                                3.        Being the first born entitled him to all the wealth, servants, possessions, animals, tents, etc…

                        C.        He meets his younger brother, Jacob.

                        D.        Many of us know the story.

                        E.         Esau was hungry.

                                                1.        He thought he was going to starve to death.

                        F.         He asked his younger brother, Jacob, for some food.

Genesis 25:30-34

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

                        G.        Not only did he despise his birthright, he missed out on the first born blessing.

                        H.        The blessing he did receive he was not happy with.

                        I.          Not only did he despise his birthright, he disdained his blessing.

III.       Amalek inherited the same spirit from his granddaddy.

                        A.        The way Esau treated the birthright and blessing created animosity between the offspring of Jacob and the offspring of Esau.

                                                1.        The offspring of Jacob are the Israelites and they value the blessings of God.

                                                2.        The offspring of Esau are the Amalekits and they disdain the blessings of God.

                        B.        The Amalekites were a constant thorn to Israel.

                                                1.        When Israel left Egypt, they met the Amalekits.

Exodus 17:8

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

                                                                        a.         Rephidim means resting place.

                                                1.        The spirit of Amalek will not allow you rest and enjoy the blessings of the Holy Ghost.

                                                2.        The spirit of Amalek will resist your worship and praise.

                                                3.        The spirit of Amalek will fight you when pray.

                        C.        The spirit of Amalek despises the blessing.

                        D.        There is one sure way to conquer the spirit of Amalek.

Exodus 17:9-14

9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

                        E.         The best and most effective way to conquer the spirit of Amalek is to help each other in our praise.

                        F.         Lift up one another’s hands.

                        G.        Support and encourage each other.

                        H.        In this way we will wipe out the spirit that despises the blessings of God completely.
