Trusting In God

Psalm 11:1-7

1  In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

2 For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.

3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?

4 The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

5 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

I.  Trusting is one of the hardest things we do.

A.  Trust means make a refuge, have confidence in or firm belief.

B.  In the context of verse 1 it literally means, David was saying he was making a refuge in God.

C.  A refuge is a place of shelter and safety.

D.  The 7 most important words from this lesson are, “In the LORD put I my trust:”.

E.  In order to trust in God, we must understand His trustworthiness.

II.  As hard as it is for us to trust…trusting comes naturally to us.

A.  Some trust in dream catchers to capture their bad dreams so they won’t come back.

B.  Some trust in their jobs to always be there to provide the money.

C.  Some people trust their brakes in their cars more than they trust God.

D.  The important consideration is not whether we trust or not…the important consideration is where do we place that trust.

Psalm 20:7

7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

Proverbs 21:31

31 The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

E.  Notice what the second part of verse one says, “How say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?”

1.  When people try to talk you out of trusting God, they are saying to you, flee to something more tangible.

2.  Flee to something you can physically see.

3.  Flee away from your troubles.

4.  Take flight and run away.

F.  Our attitude needs to be, in spite of this bad counsel, I will still trust in God.

G.  From godless psychologists to atheistic professors, the sewer of liberlism continues to spew out the garbage of humanism.

1.  They tell us not to trust in God.

2.  They tell us to trust in psychotropic drugs.

3.  They tell us to trust the system of politics.

4.  They tell us to trust hypnotism, psychology, philosophy, metaphysics, but never once do they tell us to trust in God.

H.  Ignore the counsel of the world.  Hear the counsel of the scripture…Trust in God.

III.  There are people who will take shots at you for trusting in God.

A.  Look at verse 2.

B.  The Bible calls those who would try to destroy your character, your ethics, your trust in God…wicked.

C.  It seems there will always be someone who is wicked who wants to shoot at the upright in heart.

D.  People who stand for what is right will come under attack from those who don’t because those who don’t feel guilty.

E.  Also notice the way the scripture words the methods of the wicked.  It says they will shoot in private.

F.  There are subversive wicked people who will try to assassinate you because you are trusting in God.

IV.  Now let us look at God’s trustworthiness.

A.  Verse 4.

B.  The Lord is in His holy temple denotes He is right where He needs to be.

1.  God is not bound by time or space.  He is omnipresent.

2.  You can’t place Him in a box.

C.  To further explain the vast presence of God, the Bible says, the Lord’s throne is in             heaven.”

1.  This literally means the universe.

Acts 7:49-50

49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

50 Hath not my hand made all these things?

D.  How can we begin to comprehend the infinite vast presence of God?

E.  How can we grasp the reality of His immensity?

F.  Listen to what the Lord said to Job:

Job 40:6-14

6 Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

7 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?

9 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

10 Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

11 Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. 1

2 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.

14 Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.

G.  These scriptures don’t even deal with God’s immeasurable power and infinite might.

H.  He is trustworthy, because He is the only God.

Psalm 93:1-4

The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

2 Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

4 The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

Isaiah 45:12

12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

I.  Nature alone teaches us God is trustworthy.

J.  The very existence of the stars prove His trustworthiness.

K.  Take into account the complexity of our physical existence and know…God is trustworthy.

L.  Man cannot even comprehend nuclear fission, yet God has a ball of it warming our planet.

V.  If you ever find yourself asking, “Can I trust God?”…the answer is a resounding YES!!

A.  It does not matter what we face, we can trust God.

Habakkuk 3:17-18

17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

B.  Yet, I will trust Him.

C.  Yet, He is my refuge.

D.  Yet, He is my safe place.

E.   Yet, He is worthy to be praised.

VI.  We need to learn the valuable lesson of Trusting In God.
