2 Chronicles 20:19-21

19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.

20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.

Praise

I.  Praise is never mentioned with quietness.

A.  There are times for a holy hush and quietness in service.

1.  Many times though, those quiet times are more personal and contemplative.

B.  The word praise also denotes acting like a madman.

Luke 19:37

37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

C.  People have looked at our way of praising God and called us crazy or delirious.

D.  We are just deliriously crazy about our savior.

E.  Let’s look at some scriptures dealing with praise.

The reason we shout:Psalm 5:11

11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them.

The reason we clap our hands:Psalm 47:1

1  O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

The reason we jump:Luke 6:23

23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven

The reason we sing:Psalm 98:4-5

4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

The reason we dance:Psalm 149:3

3 Let them praise his name in the dance:

Psalm 98:4-8

4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.

7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

8 Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together.

F.  When David brought the ark of God from Obededum’s house the first time, there was a             tremendous amount of praise.

1.  When the oxen that were pulling the ark stumbled Uzza reached out to steady the ark so it would not fall.

2.  Some would say, the praise was wrong.

3.  It was not the praise that was wrong, it was the fact they had the ark on a cart and not on the shoulder of the priests.

4.  The praise was right but the obedience was wrong.

a.  The cart represented the ways of the Philistines.

b.  The cart represented self will.

5.  Uzza touched the ark which was strictly prohibited by the Laws of God.

6.  God was not displeased with the loud demonstrative praise, He was displeased with the disobedience.

G.  The second time David moved the ark, he put the ark on the shoulders of the priests.

1.  There was more praising and sacrifice this time.

2.  David danced before the Lord with all his might.

a.  It is not recorded he did this the first time.

3.  Michael, Saul’s daughter, despised David because of his praise.

4.  God’s judgement on her disdain of loud demonstrative praise, was a barren womb.

Acts 2:1-6

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded…

II.  On the day of Pentecost, there was a tremendous noise.

A.  How was this noised abroad?

1.  Everyone was in the upper room receiving the Holy Ghost.

B.  It must have been so loud, they heard it on the streets.

III.  Were they quiet at Jericho when it came time for the walls to come down?

A.  Were they quiet when they ushered Jesus into Jerusalem?

B.  Were they quiet when they crossed the Red Sea?

C.  Were they quiet at the slaying of Goliath?  I Sam 17.52
