True Worshippers of God
by Gary Evensen
John 4:23-24
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers
shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
INTRODUCTION
There are many venues in which a person can approach religion.
There are many different styles and ways of worship
But whatever venue or style of worship you choose, you must choose a way that pleases God. God seeks those that will worship both in Spirit and in Truth.
It is possible to worship God in the Spirit, and not in Truth
It is also possible to worship God in Truth with no Spirit behind the worship
And then of course it is possible to choose a venue or style of worship that neither has Spirit or Truth.
Jesus spoke about 2 ways that we could choose. He called them gates.
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew 7:13-14
One gate was straight and narrow
One gate was wide and broad
One way led to life, the other to destruction
Some hold to the philosophy that says you go your way, I’ll go my way and we will all get to the same place.
But that philosophy contradicts the teachings of Jesus
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
John 10:1-2
And this agrees with our text scripture where God seeks those that will worship in Truth.
WORSHIPING IN TRUTH
Truth is a very often maligned word in the English language
In the schools and in general society today there is a push towards the philosophy that there is no absolute truth.
That philosophy is erroneous though, because there are absolute truths in mathematics, in nature, and in life.
The area where the philosophy is trying to be injected, is in the areas or morality and religion.
In an effort to justify immorality, one must get everyone else to believe there is no such thing as morality
In an effort to justify a certain affinity towards religion the popular approach is that there is no true religion, which leads us back to the thought you go you way I go mine and everything is fine and dandy. and a contradiction to the teachings of Christ.
Christ was not popular!
He was popular with the people, but in society in general Christ was not popular, he tended to get society and religious leaders mad.
In John 8:58-59 Jesus claimed to be the Great I AM
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
In John 10:30-33 Jesus claimed to be one with the Father
I and my Father are one. 31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
In Matt 12:23-25,34 Jesus had a run in with the Pharisees
And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. 25And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
He referred to them as vipers or snakes. He made no friends in the religious circles even the politicians were afraid of him
In Matt 27:19-25 Jesus stood before Pilate
When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. 22Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 24When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
Mat 27:19-25
Pilate was a politician and Jesus didn’t make enough friends or garner enough favor for a politician to stand up for him, He just managed to make then status quo mad too many times!
Jesus knew that in order to be popular He had to compromise his principals and he said it like this in LUKE 6:26
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
A true child of God will have times they just make people angry because they stick to the principles of the book, the Word of God, because they have a desire to worship God in Truth
And society and religion do not always agree with the Word of God
Jesus said himself in Matt 7:21-27
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Not everyone who calls the name of the Lord will be saved! They certainly can be saved but it takes those who are willing to do the will of the Father!
Jesus went on:
22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
There are people that are willing to walk with God but not in truth
Iniquity is wickedness characterized by a spirit of lawlessness, some reject any teachings on morality and walking with God because we are living in the time of grace yet Jesus said in John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Not everyone who knows Christ who has prayed to Christ who has believed on Christ has a revelation of who he is!
In Luke 24:36-45 the disciples got a revelation of truth!
36And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. 38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? 39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. 40And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? 42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. 43And he took it, and did eat before them. 44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
There are many people who walk today with God who do not have a revelation of Christ!
Romans 16:25 speaks of the revelation of a mystery
Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
Romans 16:25
And that revelation was about Jesus Christ!
In John 8:58-59 and John 10:30, they were upset about a revelation of who he was so they took stones to stone him.
Religious people still get upset today, still cast stones today, still persecute today at the revelation of Bible truths.
What is truth??
John 17:17 says it like this:
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Every truth we need is found in the word of God, sometimes we see more in the word than we have ever seen before and we receive what is called a revelation, but it is all contained in the word of God, there are no revelations which are not in his word.
WORSHIPPING IN SPIRIT
We were also told by Jesus in John 4:24 that he was looking for those who would worship the Lord in spirit.
When the Holy Ghost fell in the book of Acts 2:1-4 as we read on in Acts 2:6,13
we find that something happened that was very noisy and made people think that the 120 in the Upper Room were drunk.
Part of this was because they began to Speak with other tongues, but I also believe that it was because they began to worship God in the spirit.
We have a glimpse of what worship in heaven is like in the book of Revelations 4 and 19:1-9
In revelations we see a worship unlike most of religion today. Some have embraced this but most have not.
They can go to a ball game and cheer or rock concert and shout or movie and cry
But in the house of God they are reserved and quiet and want it kept that way
But in Luke 19:37-40 we have a glimpse of worship
37And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; 38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. 39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. 40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
Jesus did not tell them to be quiet, as a matter of fact he said if these wont cry out a stone will take there place!
I don’t want a stone to rob me of worshipping God in the Spirit
In Romans 13 praise is referred to as a sacrifice and fruit from out lips as we praise his name. This is a verbal form of praise
15By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
Hebrews 13:15
In Romans 15:8-10 the Apostle Paul refers to the Old Testament scriptures
8Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: 9And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. 10And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. 11And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.
In Malachi 1 the word speaks of a pure offering to his name
11For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 1:11
That offering is the sacrifice of praise and worship
How do you worship God in the Spirit??
The New Testament is relatively quiet on the subject so were going to look into the O.T. mainly in the book of Psalms to see if there are type of praise we can look to.
As we look into the book of Psalms we find there are 6 definitions to the word praise there. The ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
They all point to specific forms and types of praise and worship
The is the ???????? form of praise which is praising with uplifted hands towards heaven
H3034
?????
???????
????????
A primitive root; used only as denominative from H3027; literally to use (that
is, hold out) the hand; physically to throw (a stone, an arrow) at or away;
especially to revere or worship (with extended hands); intensively to bemoan (by
wringing the hands):-cast (out), (make) confess (-ion), praise, shoot, (give)
thank (-ful, -s, -sgiving).
1A Psalm of DavidH1732. I will praiseH3034 thee with my wholeH3605 heartH3820: beforeH5048 the godsH430 will I singH2167 praiseH2167 unto thee.
Psalms 138:1
13So we thy peopleH5971 and sheepH6629 of thy pastureH4830 will give thee thanksH3034 for everH5769: we will showH5608 forthH5608 thy praiseH8416 to all generationsH1755.
Psalms 79:13
4EnterH935 into his gatesH8179 with thanksgivingH8426, and into his courtsH2691 with praiseH8416: be thankfulH3034 unto him, and blessH1288 his nameH8034.
Psalms 100:4
1O give thanksH3034 unto the LORDH3050; callH7121 upon his nameH8034: make knownH3045 his deedsH5949 among the peopleH5971.
Psalms 105:1
15Oh that men would praiseH3034 the LORDH3068for his goodnessH2617, and for his wonderfulH6381 works to the childrenH1121 of menH120!
Psalms 107:15
The yadah seems to encompass bringing our attention to the goodness of God and offering personal thanks for his goodness in your life with hands raised towards heaven!
If you were to read Psalms 138, the yadah praise is mentioned in the 1st verse and the whole Psalm is dedicated to his lovingkindess and strength which has kept and delivered the Psalmist
Another form of praise if the ??????? form of praise, this is similar to the ???????
but with slightly different meaning and purpose
H8426
?????
???????
???????
From H3034; properly an extension of the hand, that is, (by implication)
avowal, or (usually) adoration; specifically a choir of worshippers:-confession,
(sacrifice of) praise, thanks (-giving, offering).
23Whoso offerethH2076 praiseH8426 glorifiethH3513 me: and to him that orderethH7760 his conversationH1870 aright will I showH7200 the salvationH3468 of GodH430.
Psalms 50:23
Its is also referred to as thanksgiving as in Psalms 100:4
4EnterH935 into his gatesH8179 with thanksgivingH8426, and into his courtsH2691 with praiseH8416: be thankfulH3034 unto him, and blessH1288 his nameH8034.
Psalms 100:4
Its is also referred to as confession as in Joshua 7:19 and Ezra 10:11
19And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 unto AchanH5912, My sonH1121, giveH7760, I prayH4994 thee, gloryH3519 to the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, and makeH5414 confessionH8426 unto him; and tellH5046 me nowH4994 whatH4100 thou hast doneH6213; hideH3582 it not from me.
Joshua 7:19
11NowH6258 therefore makeH5414 confessionH8426 unto the LORDH3068 GodH430 of your fathersH1, and doH6213 his pleasureH7522: and separateH914 yourselves from the peopleH5971 of the landH776, and from the strangeH5237 wivesH802.
Ezra 10:11
Its also referred to as a Thank-Offering in 2 Chronicles 33:16
16And he repairedH1129 the altarH4196 of the LORDH3068, and sacrificedH2076 thereonH5921 peaceH8002 offeringsH2077 and thankH8426 offerings, and commandedH559 JudahH3063 to serveH5647 the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478.
2 Chronicle 33:16
So we find that the ????????form of praise can be thank-offerings to God, thanksgiving to God or involve confession to God. We also see to those who offer this type of praise God will show his salvation
Then there is the ??????????????or worship in song
H8416
???????
?????????
????????????
From H1984; laudation; specifically (concretely) a hymn:-praise.
1RejoiceH7442 in the LORDH3068, O ye righteousH6662: for praiseH8416 is comelyH5000 for the uprightH3477.
2PraiseH3034 the LORDH3068 with harpH3658: singH2167 unto him with the psalteryH5035 and an instrument of tenH6218 strings.
3SingH7891 unto him a newH2319 songH7892; playH5059 skilfullyH3190 with a loud noiseH8643.
Ps 33:1-3
Here we find several things
1) Praise is comely (suitable or beautiful, some have interpreted this as fitting) for the upright
2) We should praise the lord with musical instruments
3) The musicians should play skillfully
4) We don’t have to be quiet about it
Some interpret vs 3 as Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.(NIV)
Others as Play skillfully with a shout of joy.(NKJV)
One appears to put the emphasis for shouting on the musicians, the other on the congregation but I think both should be involved when we consider the Hebrew definition for loud noise which is
H8643
???????
?????????
??????????
From H7321; clamor, that is, acclamation of joy or a battle cry; especially
clangor of trumpets, as an alarum:-alarm, blow (-ing) (of, the) (trumpets), joy,
jubile, loud noise, rejoicing, shout (-ing), (high, joyful) sound (-ing).
2SingH2167 forth the honourH3519 of his nameH8034: makeH7760 his praiseH8416 gloriousH3519.
Ps 66:2
.
Some question the need for music in the church but the scriptures I read let me know that musical praise is loved by God and as we have ability we should use music to the fullest extent possible in our services and as skillful as possible and make it as glorious as possible.
And as the church go on we have to avoid prideful professionalism. Things can be beautiful and worship can be wonderful when the anointing of God is there. And we should practice and we should work on our abilities but all for the glory of God and not our own personal gain and attention
The next form of praise is the ???????
H2167
?????
??????
????????
A primitive root (perhaps identical with H2168 through the idea of striking
with the fingers); properly to touch the strings or parts of a musical instrument,
that is, play upon it; to make music, accompanied by the voice; hence to
celebrate in song and music:-give praise, sing forth praises, psalms.
7My heartH3820 is fixedH3559, O GodH430, my heartH3820 is fixedH3559: I will singH7891 and give praiseH2167.
Psalms 57:7
33I will singH7891 unto the LORDH3068 as longH5704 as I liveH2416: I will singH2167 praise to my GodH430 whileH5750 I have my beingH5750.
Psalms 104:33
3PraiseH1984 the LORDH3050; for the LORDH3068 is goodH2896: singH2167 praises unto his nameH8034; for it is pleasantH5273.
Psalms 135:3
3Let them praiseH1984 his nameH8034 in the danceH4234: let them singH2167 praises unto him with the timbrelH8596 and harpH3658.
Psalms 149:3
The zamar praise speaks directly to those with musical ability. Don’t waste your time on worldly music that takes you away from God. But use your abilities for his Glory. You can have a ministry in Christian music in the church and out. It’s not wrong to have a dream but let God direct that dream and he will open the doors and he will make a way.
The devil knows your price and he will pay it to get a hold of your soul and unfortunately once he gets a hold of you if you ever come back at all you won’t be coming back to God in glory but in brokenness and hurt by the events of life.
The time you spend developing worldly talent can be so much better used developing Godly talent. Musical praise can’t be glorious without talented musicians and the devil knows this and the music ministry of this hour and not only in this church is under great attack today.
Is all music wrong?? No.. The question is that of profit
35And thisG5124 I speakG3004 for yourG5216 ownG846 profitG4851; not that I may castG1911 a snareG1029 upon you, but for that which is comelyG2158, and that ye may attendG2145 upon the LordG2962 withoutG563 distractionG563.
1 Corinthians 7:35
These are questions you can ask about your music
1) Does it distract you from God
2) Does it incite the base lust of the flesh through lyrics or rhythm
3) Does it divide you devotion between God and the world
4) Does it make you want to pray or party
Let me read to you from the NKJV Luke 21:34-36
34″But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
The next form of praise is the ??????????
H7623
?????
????????
??????????
A primitive root; properly to address in a loud tone, that is, (specifically)
loud; figuratively to pacify (as if by words):-commend, glory, keep in, praise,
still, triumph.
Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
Psalms 63:3
O PraiseH1984 the LORDH3068, allH3605 ye nationsH1471: praiseH7623 him, allH3605 ye peopleH523.
Psalms 117:3
H1471
??????????
??????????
?????????????
Apparently from the same root as H1465 (in the sense of massing); a foreign
nation; hence a Gentile; also (figuratively) a troop of animals, or a flight of
locusts:-Gentile, heathen, nation, people.
12PraiseH7623 the LORDH3068, O JerusalemH3389; praiseH1984 thy GodH430, O ZionH6726.
Psalms 147:12
The ?????????? is to praise God with a loud voice, this is what they did when Jesus entered into Jerusalem on the donkey, it is also for the Gentiles, it is for all nations, all people.
Finally there is the ?????? praise
H1984
?????
??????
????????
A primitive root; to be clear (originally of sound, but usually of color); to
shine; hence to make a show; to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to
rave; causatively to celebrate; also to stultify:-(make) boast (self), celebrate,
commend, (deal, make), fool (-ish, -ly), glory, give [light], be (make, feign self)
mad (against), give in marriage, [sing, be worthy of] praise, rage, renowned,
shine.
The halal praise is a boisterous clamorous sometimes foolish praise
3I will callH7121 upon the LORDH3068, who is worthy to be praisedH1984: so shall I be savedH3467 from mine enemiesH341.
Psalms 18:3
23Ye that fearH3373 the LORDH3068, praiseH1984 him; allH3605 ye the seedH2233 of JacobH3290, glorifyH3513 him; and fearH1481 him, allH3605 ye the seedH2233 of IsraelH3478.
Psalms 22:23
Halal is translated as boast in Psalms 34:23
2My soulH5315 shall make her boastH1984 in the LORDH3068: the humbleH6041 shall hearH8085 thereof, and be gladH8056.
3O magnifyH1431 the LORDH3068 with me, and let us exaltH7311 his nameH8034 togetherH3162.
Psalms 34:2-3
3GloryH1984 ye in his holyH6944 nameH8034: let the heartH3820 of them rejoiceH8055 that seekH1245 the LORDH3050.
Psalms 105:3
But the most famous is Psalms 150. Ps 150 is the Halal Praise psalm
1PraiseH1984 ye the LORDH3050. PraiseH1984 GodH410 in his sanctuaryH6944: praiseH1984 him in the firmamentH7549 of his powerH5797.
2PraiseH1984 him for his mightyH1369 acts: praiseH1984 him according to his excellentH7230 greatnessH1433.
3PraiseH1984 him with the soundH8629 of the trumpetH7782: praiseH1984 him with the psalteryH5035 and harpH3658.
4PraiseH1984 him with the timbrelH8596 and danceH4234: praiseH1984 him with stringedH4482 instrumentsH4482 and organsH5748.
5PraiseH1984 him upon the loudH8085 cymbalsH6767: praiseH1984 him upon the highH8643 soundingH8643 cymbalsH6767.
6Let everyH3605 thing that hath breathH5397 praiseH1984 the LORDH3050. PraiseH1984 ye the LORDH3050.
Psalms 150
This is what David did when he danced before the Lord with all his might in 2 Samuel 6:14
The halal form of praise is used
1) to praise his word Ps56:4
2) to praise his name Ps69:30
3) to praise him in the assembly Ps107:32
4) to praise him among the multitude Ps109:30
5) while we live we should praise the Lord Ps146:2
6) the meek should praise the Lord Ps22:26
The word says the Dead Praise not the Lord
17The deadH4191 praiseH1984 not the LORDH3050, neitherH3808 anyH3605 that goH3381 downH3381 into silenceH1745.
Ps 115:17
A person that is spiritually dead will not praise him!
Don’t allow yourself to go down into silence
When a person becomes so appreciative of God in there life it is just natural for his praise to spring forth in the life of the believer, and when you allow your natural emotions to rise up in praise before God you come into the realm of worshipping in the spirit.
Some sing with all there might
Some play instruments with all there might
Some cry before God
Some shout with a loud voice
Some lift there hands towards heaven
Some praise him in the halal form of praise
Whatever fits your personality is the way you should praise god but always be open for the moving of the spirit in your life in the area of praise and worship.
Sometimes God will move upon you to reach out in a deeper way, always be open to the moving of his spirit.
Because God is looking for those who will worship him in spirit
Worshipping in spirit is never sensual or inappropriate
Worshipping in spirit is never gross or disgusting
Some under the guise of being led by the spirit do err in there way.
But the errors of some should not keep us from coming into the presence of God ourselves
Worshipping in truth leaves you open to the word of god in your life to the revelation of scriptural truths but is never extra biblical, we don’t need another book its all found in the word of God. Sometimes we read books that offer insight but never additional things that are not found in the word of God
Exercise faith when it comes to bible truths, desire biblical truths
Faith in his word will bring miracles forth in your life.
