If You Were To Die Today,

Where Would You Spend Eternity?

Heb  1:8   8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.  9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

“I want to talk to us today about the city that Abraham looked for.”

“I want to talk to us about Heaven.”

I was 15 when a young person asked me the question…”If you were to die today, would you go to Heaven or to Hell?”

·        To that point in my life, I had not thought much on my eternal home.

·        I suppose I had imagined what Heaven must have been like, just as I had imagined what Hell would be like.

·        But I never really considered that someday I would be in one or the other for eternity.

Someone described eternity as a huge stainless steel sphere the size of the earth.

·        Every 10,000 years a sparrow would circle the sphere and in doing so would brush her wing against the sphere.

·        At the time that her brushing the sphere with her wing every 10,000 years would cause the huge sphere to become decreased to the size of an apple, eternity would have just begun.

“That my friend is a long time!”

Eternity – “A place in time where there is no such thing as time.”

“It has a beginning, but it has no end.”

Some would say that eternity begins when we die,

·        But I believe that eternity began the day we were born into this world.

·        Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

What God blew into Adam was something that was not temporal.

·        It was not something that would only live for a short amount of time,

·        But what God blew into Adams lungs was a part of His eternal being that would cause Adam to live forever!

·        It does not say he became a living person.

·        It say’s that He became a living Soul.

·        You see the soul is something that never dies!

Though the flesh die and decay, the soul God created in you will live eternally somewhere!

You are not just flesh and blood today, but you are also soul and you are spirit.

The spirit is the thing that drives a person to become what or who they are, but it is the soul that encompasses all that a person is whether in body or in spirit.

·        It is the soul that God loves.

·        He will chastise the flesh.

·        But it was for your eternal soul that He died on the cross.

You see the flesh will pass away, but your soul will live forever.

·        God knows this, so it is for your soul that He strives with you.

·        It is for your eternal soul that He convicts your heart.

God know that you are not simply a temporal being, and for that reason, he shed His blood for your sins.

·        He knows that you are going to spend eternity someplace.

·        And the problem and the dilemma that mankind has today is that there is a loving Savior who does not want them to spend that eternity in Hell.

·        But he wants them to spend that eternity with Him in Heaven.

The scripture we read today mentions that Abraham searched for a city who’s builder and maker was God.

·        Abraham sought for that heaven here on this earth.

·        How many know today that this world will never satisfy your soul.?

·        Our eternal home is not here.

·        It is not in this world.

·        You wouldn’t know that by the way some people live, but really folks, heaven cannot be found here.

·        It’s not in riches.

·        It’s not in fame.

·        It’s not in homes.

·        It’s not in retirement funds.

Gen 27:39  39And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

John 14:2  2In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

·        My mansion is not in this world.

·        My retirement home is not in this earth.

·        I have fixed my sights much higher than the wealthiest of earthly subdivisions.

·        My heavenly mansion is eternally more beautiful than any home you can find here below.

·        I want you to know today, that Jesus is preparing a heavenly mansion made just for you today.

“that where I am, there ye may be also”…    You see Jesus desires for you to go to heaven.

jn 3:16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

550 times in the bible the place called heaven is mentioned.

550 reminders that we don’t have to go to Hell.

550 messages of hope.

550 reminders of our eternal home.

John the Baptist began the preaching of heaven in the Gospels with…Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

John knew that mankind in it’s lost state could never make heaven their home.

·        But if we would repent…..

·        If we would turn back to God…

·        Then the kingdom of heaven was near to us.

That’s how close heaven is to us today!

·        Repentance begins a trek back to God that leads to Heaven.

·        Is that all one must do to get to heaven?

·        No, the Bible also talks about being baptized in Jesus name and receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost!

But repentance is the first step.

·        And most often the hardest step to living for God.

1Pet 1:3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

ready to be revealed in the last time.

If you were to die today, where would you spend eternity?
