He Is My Hero

Ephesians 2: 12-13

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Today being Veterans Day, I am reminded of the many heroes we should be very grateful to.

When I think of Heroes I think of the young men and women of the armed forces of this great nation who died for our country especially in this last century.

World War I 1917–1918 53,402
World War II 1937–1945 291,557

Vietnam War 1955–1975 47,355
Korean War 1950–1953 33,746
Current War on Terror

Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world

2001–present Nearing 10,000

  • These men and women willingly put their lives in harms way for our country.
  • They are true patriots
  • Heroes of this great nation.

When I think of heroes, I think of the many men and women too numerous to mention, who gave their own lives so that others could escape the burning and collapsing buildings of the World Trade Center.

When I think of Heroes, I think of the many thousands of firemen who stand ready to protect the lives and properties of each of us here today.

These men and women protect us day and night from fire and rescue us from accidents.

When I think of Heroes, I think of the men in uniform who patrol our city streets while we sleep at night.

Sadly, you hear of their deaths in the line of duty too often in this country.

Each of these men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty has a story to tell.

Every one of them are worthy of the mention of that story here today and every day.

——————-

But I would like to talk to you for a few minutes about my hero.

I would like to take a little bit of time if I could, and tell you about the one who laid down His life for you and for me.

  • You see there was a time in my life when even to me, my life seemed worthless.
  • There was a time when I was without hope.
  • And this gentleman’s life was willingly sacrificed for mine.  According to the scriptures, his death bought my salvation.

But if you were to ask me today who My Hero is…

  • If you wanted to know who my Super Hero is today…
  • I would have to tell you about Jesus Christ

Ephesians 2: 12

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

  • I remember the hopelessness
  • I remember the darkness
  • I remember the disparity
  • I remember the utter fear of death and Hell because I knew I was lost if Jesus did not find me.

But can I tell you about someone who stood between this Earth and Hell for you and I.

  • Can I tell you about my hero?
  • Can I tell you about the great God of Heaven who robed Himself in flesh for the soul purpose of saving mankind from themselves?
  • Can I tell you about the one who loves you more than any father or mother could ever love you?

  • He is the one who went to the Cross of Calvary willingly for you and for me.

His death would mark the end of the war Satan has waged against mankind for thousands of years.

  • Understand today, what you are going through in your life is nothing new.
  • The trouble in your life.
  • The temptations of your flesh and mind are truly nothing new in this world.

As you read the scriptures, you find Satan over and over again lying to people and convincing them that they neither need nor deserve to have a relationship with a loving God.

Story after recorded story tragically ends with a soul who has missed their opportunity to come into relationship with the God who created and loved them.

  • How sad the state of mankind really is without His love.
  • How intensely miserable this world is without His instruction.
  • Without his guidance, direction and concern, we really are lost and without hope.

But if anyone would “believe on Him” the scriptures tell us, they could then be saved.

  • But to believe on Him is to do more than simply believe that he is, but it is to believe on Him to the extent of living for Him and having a relationship with Him.

We know today that Jesus was more than a mere man, but that He was in fact God manifest in the Flesh of a human ben.

  • As a man, he suffered and died for you and I,
  • But as God He rose from the dead victorious over sin and death.

You see we have access today to the throne of Grace because of the sacrifice and torturous death of this one who was sinless.

  • He did not deserve to die, I did.
  • He did not deserve to suffer, I did.

  • It was for my sin that he was crucified.
  • It was for the sins of the world that he agonized on an old rugged cross.

I’m so glad Jesus rescued me.

  • I’m so glad He saved me.

  • I owed a debt I could never pay.
  • He paid a debt he did not owe – for me.

I am not ashamed to tell you that I love Him.

  • I am not ashamed to tell you that I worship Him.

  • For without Him in my life, my life surely would be miserable.
  • Without Him, I would be without God.

He is worthy of my allegiance.

  • He is worthy of my praise.
  • He is worthy of my worship.

  • He is the reason today that I have hope.
  • He is the reason I can face tomorrow and tomorrows tomorrow.
  • He is why I am truly happy today.
  • It’s because of Him that I have peace of mind.
  • I don’t have to fear what the future holds anymore because I know that He will be there.
  • And as long as He is there, everything is going to be all right.

As Job of old said,

Job 7:6?My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.

I know that disaster may happen.

  • I know that sickness may come.
  • I know that death will some day claim me, but after that I still have hope!

  • If there is anything that 30 years of walking with Jesus has given me its HOPE!

  • Hope for my future.
  • Hope for my family.
  • Hope for my job
  • Hope for the trouble in my life.
  • Hope when there’s disparity.
  • Hope situations that arise against me.
  • Hope for salvation

We have hope today because of Jesus!

  • We can have confidence in our future because He loves us.
  • We can know that regardless of the situation in our lives that God is still there and that He cares for us.
  • And if God cares for me what and who could destroy me?

We have a Hero today!

  • We have a Champion.
  • We have someone who won the victory over Death, Hell and the Grave.
  • And He did it because He loves us.
  • He did it because He cares for us.

Don’t let anyone ever tell you that God does not care about you.

  • The scriptures tell us that you are the apple of His eye.
  • He knows the number of hairs on your head.
  • He knows your comings and your goings.
  • He knows the intents of your heart.
  • While you were yet in your mother’s womb, He knew you. According to what the Bible says.

You are important to Him.

  • You are the reason He suffered on the Cross.
  • You are the reason he endured the beating
  • You are the reason he withstood the nails being driven into his hands and feet.
  • It was because of His great love for you and I that He hung on that old rugged cross.

  • You mean that much to Him.
  • That’s how much He is concerned about you.

Someone asked the question one time, “Would God send someone else to save the world, or would He come Himself?

  • I’m so glad He didn’t send some substitute.
  • The Bible says that Jesus was God “Manifest In The Flesh”.
  • There was no standby at Calvary,
  • There was no stand in.
  • He was the only one who could pay the ransom for your soul.
  • And He paid it lock stock and barrel.

There is nothing owing on you if you would accept His grace and forgiveness today.

You don’t have to leave here today wondering if God knows or even cares about you.

The baby in the manger and the man on the cross was all about you.

It was all about His great love for you today.

God cares about YOU!
