An Open Door

In the sermon outline “An Open Door,” we delve into the powerful message addressed to the church in Philadelphia found in the book of Revelation. This message, filled with hope and encouragement, speaks to us today about divine opportunities and God’s Open Door.

Scripture Focus

Revelation 3:6-11 (KJV) provides the foundation for this sermon:

6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

The Authority of Christ

Verse 7 introduces Jesus as the one who holds the key of David. This key signifies authority and control. As Isaiah 22:22 (KJV) says:

22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

Jesus’s sovereign authority ensures that the doors He opens for us are divinely appointed and cannot be shut by any force.

A Little Strength

In verse 8, Jesus acknowledges the church’s “little strength.” This highlights their dependence on God rather than their own abilities. Despite limited resources, they remained faithful.

Gideon’s story in Judges 7 shows how God used a small number to achieve a great victory. Similarly, the church in Philadelphia, though small, was strong in faith.

The Promise of Vindication

Verse 9 speaks of vindication for the faithful. Jesus promises that truth and righteousness will ultimately prevail.

Joseph’s journey from slavery to power in Egypt, despite false accusations, demonstrates how God's Open Door brings vindication to His faithful servants.

Protection from Temptation

Verse 10 assures protection from the “hour of temptation.” This promise is particularly comforting in a world filled with trials.

Psalm 91 beautifully encapsulates this promise of protection:

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Holding Fast to Our Crown

In verse 11, Jesus exhorts believers to “hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” This crown represents the rewards of faithfulness.

The Open Door in Our Lives

The concept of an open door applies to each of us. God sets before us opportunities and divine appointments. It requires faith and courage to walk through these doors.

Acts 16:6-10 illustrates how Paul recognized and responded to an open door for ministry, leading to the spread of the Gospel.
