GO BUY A SWORD

Luke 22:35-38 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

1.             He first begins by bringing up the past

Luke 10:3-4 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.

a)             I sent you out without purse (money) or bag (provisions)

b)             I sent you without shoes

c)             I told you not to worry about those things

(1)           Preach, heal, deliver

Luke 10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

d)             They came back, “Even the devils are subject unto us”

C.             Now he commands them to “buy a sword”

1.             It is a different era for ministry

a)             Jesus knows that after his death the disciples will face despair

b)             Jesus knows that after Pentecost the disciples will face persecution

(1)           It is not a physical sword that he is referring to
(a)           The disciples do not understand
(b)           They point to physical swords
(2)           It is a “sword of the Spirit

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

(a)           The word of God
(b)           The soldier mindset

III.          What can we learn?

A.            There are times when everything goes right

1.             We pray – people get healed

2.             The Holy Ghost falls

3.             People get baptized

4.             Our needs are met

a)             God provides

b)             God protects

c)             God blesses

B.            There are times when we need to buy a “sword”

a)             We are in pain

b)             We are in doubt

c)             We feel abandoned and alone

d)             This is the time to “buy a sword”

3.             We have to develop an iron will, to stand against adversity

4.             We have to sharpen ourselves to cut through the lies and deception of Satan

IV.           Different Ministry

A.            Short term vs. Long term

1.             Short trip

a)             Don’t pack much

b)             You expect to come back quick

2.             Long Trip

a)             Pack a lot

Mark 10:50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

(2)           Others occupations were identified by their cloaks

1.             It takes time and dedication to master a sword

2.             It takes training and practice to master a sword

b)             Whether that is through mentoring or self instruction

c)             No one becomes a sword master, without practice
