Please Hurry – I’m Hungry!

A simple message to young people who think they are not valuable in the kingdom of God.

“Please Hurry – I’m Hungry!”

John 6:35

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

In the corporate world there are terms that are used – and then there are words that are overused! Proactive, Paradigm Shift (definition of Buzzwords-Stock phrases that have become nonsense through endless repetition)

The overused word that I will start with today is- “Synergy”

Synergy is the working together of two things to produce an effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.

Person “A” alone is too short to reach an apple on a tree and person “B” is too short as well. Once person “B” sits on the shoulders of person “A”, they are more than tall enough to reach the apple. The synergy would be the apple

Synergy most often, is the phenomenon of two or more individual influences acting in common to create something that is greater than the sum of the two individuals independently.

Synergy has also been described as:

The excess stemming from cooperation.

I hated math in school until I took a math course my freshman year called “Consumer Mathematics” where we studied math in the real world. I began to learn things like how to balance a checkbook, and how to solve real life problems by using math.

I could now tell you how to figure your electric bill based upon your 30-day usage rate.

I could tell you how to figure the efficiency of your hot water heater based upon its BTU specification. I even learned that BTU stood for British Thermal Units!

And math began to have a purpose and math became fun to learn.

Now, instead of just putting numbers together for a grade… the problems and formulas were for a purpose. And I could get my mind around that and I began to make better grades.

Another math phenomenon I enjoy is the power of an exponent.

Exponent – A mathematical notation indicating the number of times a quantity is multiplied by itself.

You can take a small number like 5 and place a little 5 up in the right corner- and that lonely 5 becomes 3125.

Because you are applying the power of the exponent number the base value.

And when you take my value as a human it is not that great, but when I have the power of God applied to my life, my value increases exponentially

That 5 standing alone becomes 3125 once the “power of 5” is applied!

There is a scripture that I have always scratched my head when I read it… I never quite understood Deuteronomy 32:30  How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight?

And until you understand the power exponents you never will understand that scripture.

When you have the God of heaven as your exponent value you go from a lonely 1 to a great force of supernatural power.

Once His power is applied to your life. WOW! You can do all things through Christ…

How can one chase a thousand and two put 10 thousand to flight? It’s the synergy of Jesus and you working in cooperation.

Synergy – The excess stemming from cooperation!

The year was 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, what we do not always mention is that it took 3 ships and 87 crewmen to bring about that successful voyage. We don’t think about the months a planning and the numerous efforts of many others besides Mr. Columbus. If it were left to Christopher Columbus to man every station of the ship he would not have ever discovered the new world.

The monthly payroll of his personnel totaled over $21,000.00 per month, in today’s currency.

It took men who would look beyond themselves, beyond their fears of death, beyond their fears of falling off of the edge of the earth. Together they with Mr. Columbus were able to look out that foggy morning as the sun appeared and they began to see the trees and mountains of the new world on the horizon. No, Mr. Columbus it was not by yourself that the voyage was a success but it was by the efforts many that victory was enjoyed.

Please Hurry, I’m Hungry!

If we can work together as a team and just keep our sails up we can see the new world!

May 5, 1961 at exactly 2:34 in the afternoon, the United States succeeded. The first American astronaut had experienced the weightlessness of space flight. It was just a 15 minute and 22 second flight. But it was out of this world.

Mr. Allen B. Shepard Jr. aboard the Mercury Redstone 3, traveling over 4500 miles per hour – he conquered what before had only been written about by science fiction writers, and dreamed of by those too fearful to rise to the challenge.

I know Mr. Shepherd spent years preparing for this great day, every morning for a month preceding the flight he went to Hanger "S" in Cape Canaveral, FL to run through the flight simulations, many times, even before lunch, but Mr. Shepherd alone could not have accomplished this great achievement by himself. It took over 18,000 NASA engineers and scientist working for over 3 years to put together such success.

Please Hurry, I’m Hungry!

(At this point I had all of my youth workers and staff members come stand at the front.)

In closing: The Dallas Cowboys: The most recognized sports franchise in the world has a coach by the name of Bill Parcels. Bill is the man in charge as long as Jerry Jones says he can be.

If we were to watch a football game we would see 11 players at work on the field.

But what we don’t see on any given Sunday is the rest of the team:

63 players (including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, teams – practice squads, and injured reserve players)

14 Coaches

3 Front Office Executives

For a total of 80 people working together.

Plus about 100 office personnel, not counting the television and radio network personnel, grounds keepers, doctors, trainers, venders or the many other people who don’t have popular names or faces, but work hard everyday to make up what we know as the Dallas Cowboys.

Bill Parcels gets to “Shine in the Glory” on the Winning Days, and he gets to “Shoulder the Burden” of the Losing Days, but without the synergy of everybody working hard… there would be no Dallas Cowboys.

(Now I am talking about those who came forward)

Without these people right here there would be no youth department.

As youth pastor, I get to hold the microphone today, but without the synergy of this team, and without the exponential power of God in our lives we would be nothing.

Somebody say: Please Hurry, I’m Hungry!

There are young people who’s cries cannot be understood because of the noise of this world, but if we could get a little closer to them we would hear them whisper: “Please Hurry.” Please Hurry with your outreach program, please hurry and tell me more about Jesus, I may look preoccupied… but please hurry before I make another wrong turn, please hurry before I get myself pregnant, please hurry before I make a total mess of my life, because “I’m Hungry” for what you have! I am Hungry for Jesus in my life. I am Hungry for something real that can change me forever! There is a void in my life that I can not seem to fill with the thrills of this life. Please Hurry! I’m Hungry!

They may never come to a stiff, traditional church on a Sunday at 9:30 in the morning – but I can hear them saying please Hurry and meet me where I live, please Hurry and make room in your life for someone in need. I know you have your church friend, and I know that you think I have it all together, Please Hurry, I’m Hungry!

When you team up with the exponential power of Jesus – one can put a thousand to flight and two can put ten thousand to flight.

There is a world of people who are crying out Please Hurry, I’m Hungry! We can take them the bread of life; we can lead them to a well that will never run dry.

God is not willing that any perish, but all come to repentance. The “Synergy” of you and God working together is more than enough exponential power to accomplish any task.
