Missing the Significance
Text: Genesis 25:29-33
I. Esau had everything going for him
A. First born – Birthright
B. Great hunter
C. Loved by his father
II. What was at stake
A. The birthright
1. The dew of heaven
2. The fatness of the earth
3. Plenty of corn
4. Plenty of wine
5. All people will serve him
6. Nations will bow down to him
7. He would be lord over his brethren
8. Brothers will bow down to him
9. Curses upon those that curse him
10. Blessings upon those that bless him
B. Something to eat
1. Esau was obviously more concerned with his flesh then he was with his inheritance.
2. He didn’t fully understand the birthright and what was at stake.
3. Esau thought that he somehow was still going to get the birthright.
III. Obstacles
A. Although Esau gave away his birthright; he still was called upon by his father.
B. Jacob had to convince Isaac that he was Esau
IV. Priorities
A. Sometimes we misconstrue what is important and what is not.
B. Matthew 16:26
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
