The Apostle John was the disciple whom Jesus loved (see John 21:7). John was the writer of one of the four gospels (John) as well as 1, 2 and 3 John. Obviously we are looking at the book of 1 John for the next few weeks. So let’s ask ourselves a question, “Why is this book written?” [ read more...]1 John 1:2-5
Let me ask you a question. How do you know you are in community (fellowship) with God? Is it a feeling? Is it some work you do? Is it because you come to church on Sunday? All of these things are good and necessary. The Apostle John is attempting to ask and answer that question in these verse we have read [ read more...]1 John 2:3-6
So far in this series of sermons in the book of 1 John we have talked about, The Jesus Life and The Examined Life. Today I want us to look into the scriptures and talk about another kind of life: “The Holy Life.” When we looked at The Jesus Life we learned that God IS light and His light shines through those who are willing to live The Examined Life. Today we will see how the LIGHT (Jesus) not only wants to shine but be reflected from us to others as we live The Holy Life. [ read more...]1 John 2:7-11
So far in this series on 1 John we have talked about: “The Jesus Life,” “The Examined Life,” and last week we spoke about “The Holy Life.” Today we are going to look at 1John 2:7 – 11 and we are going to see how living for God requires and gives us the privilege of loving our brother. I have an electronic diary where I write down important dates, meetings, notes and so on. Then I have my cell phone set to give an alarm for those really important things. Why do I use these tools? Well, I have learned over the years that memory is a very poor servant and I must be REMINDED of things in order to accomplish the tasks needed to help my family and this church. It is so very hard, as a Pentecostal preacher who believes whole-heartedly in the second coming of the Lord, not to use this portion of scripture as a launching pad to preach about the soon coming of Jesus. After all John writes repeatedly about the “anti-Christ” in these verses. However, John is not really writing about the ONE anti-Christ who will rule the end time world government along with the false prophet but John uses the term anti-Christ in a different and more broad way in this passage. Over the last several weeks we have covered a lot of territory in the book of 1 John. We have hit some really big issues and talked about walking the light and love of Jesus Christ and because of that we have eternal life if we do the will of God and love our brothers in Christ. Remember how we summed up this great book… [ read more...]1 John 5:21-21
We have come a long way in the book of 1 John. We have tackled some thorny issues that face each of us on a daily basis: love, life, walking in the light, obeying the commands of God and more. We have discovered that Jesus desires for us to live lives of HOLINESS (separation from the world system) and RIGHTEOUSNESS (keeping our relationships right with God and our brother). [ read more...]
