Acts 12:16-19

Because of the nature of man, he lives in two worlds. First, in a very public world that he is visible to all and there are some social responsibilities to live up to in this world. Second, there is a private world that can be a place of blessing and contentment or it can be a private hell of torture.

How Far Can You Go On Empty

Amos 5:4-6
Topic: Spiritual Growth
Two Irishmen, Pat and Mike, had narrowly escaped death on a sinking ship. They were floundering around in icy ocean waters on a couple of planks. Pat had a problem with often resorting to some of the grossest profanity and he thought that he ought to repent of it and then the Lord would come to his rescue. Mike thought his theology was sound. Pat began to pray, but just before arriving at the main thesis of his repentant prayer, Mike spotted a ship coming toward them. As delighted as Columbus when he first spotted the North American shore, Mike hollered, “Hold it, Pat. Don’t commit yourself, here’s a ship.” Pat immediately stopped praying! Isn’t that the way that many of us are? The only time we pray is when we are “in a jam.” As soon as things improve we forget God. (From John Haggai, Run To Win) [ read more... ]

Fire in the Barley Field

2 Samuel 14:29-31
Topic: Spiritual Growth
In 2 Samuel 9, there is a very compelling story about a young man named Mephibosheth that I think would bless us to consider. First there are some things that we need to establish about Mephibosheth. At the age of five he, as the grandson of the reigning king, was wealthy beyond his wildest imagination. He was a strong and healthy boy. And though he may not have known it yet, he was in line to be king of Israel some day. Because of who Grandpa was, he would one day be king of the mightiest nation on the earth at that time. At five he already had wealth, health, power and promise of a very bright and sustaining future. [ read more... ]
