The Book of Acts—Life In the Spirit

Acts 1:1-3

Just a few weeks ago at our General Conference (September 26-29, 2010) in Houston, Texas Bible College hosted a reunion of sorts for all TBC alumni. Part of the program allowed all of the past presidents of the college to address those who attended. I was particularly struck by the comments of former president James Hughes who was there in the late ‘90’s after I had graduated. He gave a brief recount of the trends that started some 40 years ago with the beginning of the church growth movement.

Image for sermon The First Sermon of the Church

The First Sermon of the Church

Acts 1:1-3
Topic: The Church
It is important to understand that when Peter stood to preach on the day of Pentecost that he had been filled with the Spirit. This gave oldness to his actions and there was an abiding authority that had not been present prior to Pentecost. If a man does not have authority he should not endeavor to fulfill the call to ministry. The burden of preaching is on the preacher therefore he must be equipped by the Holy Ghost to fulfill this role of speaking the word of the Lord. Any effective preaching will always have the work of the Holy Ghost involved in the delivery of the message. [ read more... ]

The Human Touch For the Human Race

Acts 1:1-8
Topic: Evangelism
An imaginary story without biblical basis speaks of Jesus ascending back to Heaven and meeting with the Angel Gabriel. Jesus explained how He had died on the cross to save mankind from their sins; and had been raised up again. He had now returned to Heaven to intercede for those that He had gone to save. Jesus concluded by saying that it was His desire that all men everywhere would hear the Gospel message of what he had done for them. [ read more... ]

Several years ago, I had my interest piqued concerning the book of Acts due to a message I heard preached in a conference setting. The focus of the message was concerned with the principles that were found in the book of Acts concerning how the Church was to function and operate. So I purchased a small notebook and begin to read through the book of Acts in sort of a devotional/expositional approach with the main question being... [ read more... ]

The Eulogy Of The Cross

Acts 1:1-8
Topic: The Cross
Do not allow the term eulogy to intimidate you, though we generally affix that term to funerals. In its root meaning, a eulogist is merely a praiser who praises, or speaks well of, or positively of; to eulogize is to leave on record a positive testimony in regards of the object in which you eulogize. I want to take a little time to talk about the goodness, and the marvelous, manifold wisdom of the cross! [ read more... ]

Steadfastness is a very desirable trait to have in our lives. We live in a very unstable world that seems as if it is changing every hour of the day.
