Navigating the complexities of church leadership and pastoral ministry is no easy feat. We’re all trying to build healthy congregations, grow in our personal walk with God, and allow the Holy Spirit to move freely in our services. In this endeavor, it’s just as important to know what NOT to do as it is to understand what steps to take. This list of 20 “Don’ts” for Preachers lays out some of the pitfalls to avoid, grounded in scriptural wisdom and practical experience.

1. Don’t Live Beyond Your Income

Remember what Paul said, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Living beyond your income not only puts financial strain on your household but can also cause your congregation to question your integrity. Be a steward of God’s blessings.

2. Don’t Be a Stingy Person

The Bible is clear: “Give, and it will be given to you” (Luke 6:38). If we are tight-fisted, how can we expect our congregation to be generous? Lead by example in all areas of giving—time, finances, and spiritual gifts.

3. Don’t Preach Your Doubts

You’re human; you’ll have doubts. However, the pulpit is not the place to air them. People look to you for spiritual guidance and assurance. Take your doubts to the Lord in prayer, consult with fellow pastors, but don’t let them seep into your sermons.

4. Don’t Preach So Much Against Things but Preach Principles

It’s easy to rail against the sins of the world. It’s harder, but more effective, to teach the principles that address the root causes of those sins. Remember, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17).

5. Don’t Be Tempted on Any Occasion Not to Preach Your Best

You might be tired, or it might be a “low-attendance” service, but remember, you’re not just preaching to people, you’re ministering unto the Lord. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

6. Don’t Be Looking for a Larger Field or Another Call

Paul reminds us, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11). Your current assignment is your mission field. Be faithful in the little things, and God will entrust you with more (Luke 16:10).

7. Don’t Be a Pessimist

Paul was a guy in chains who sang hymns and won converts among the jailers. Enough said. “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).

8. Don’t Deal in Off-Color Stories

I mean, if you want to joke about how Noah was probably the first person to experience “cabin fever,” go for it. But keep your humor clean and uplifting. Anything less is unbecoming of a minister (Ephesians 5:4).

9. Don’t Lose Your Temper in Public

James tells us, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19). Enough said. Let the fruits of the Spirit guide you (Galatians 5:22-23).

10. Don’t Overlook the Bible When Looking for Preaching Texts

“Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Other resources can support, but the Bible is the cornerstone of your preaching.

11. Don’t Be Jealous of Your Fellow Ministers

We’re all on the same team. “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another” (Galatians 5:26). When one of us wins, we all win.

12. Don’t Scold or Deal in Personalities

Sure, a rebuke has its place, but it should always be done in love (Revelation 3:19). Keep the focus on God’s Word and principles, not personal attacks.

13. Don’t Be Artificial or Insensitive

People can spot a fake. Keep it real, keep it compassionate. “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15).

14. Don’t Belittle Little Things

Jesus said, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10). Small acts of kindness and small portions of Scripture can have a big impact.

15. Don’t Be Lazy

Remember the parable of the talents? God expects us to be productive with what He’s given us (Matthew 25:14-30).

16. Don’t Neglect the Sick and Sorrowing

Your ministry is as much about what happens outside the church walls as within. James 5:14 recommends that we should pray over the sick, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.

17. Don’t Betray a Confidence

Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose. “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret” (Proverbs 11:13).

18. Don’t Fail to Keep Your Appointments

Being reliable is a form of integrity. Keep your word, show up, and be present in the moment.

19. Don’t Allow Anyone to Dictate Your Message

Your message is given to you by the Holy Spirit. “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13).

20. Don’t Fail to Pray

This most crucial point is saved for last. Prayer isn’t preparation for the battle; prayer IS the battle. “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
